Should I Upgrade My GPU Before My CPU?

I currently have an Intel i7-13700KF, 32GB of DDR5-6400 CL36 memory, and an RTX 3070. I mainly game at 1440p on a 165Hz monitor, with a secondary 4K 144Hz display, and usually play at medium or low settings because the GPU is holding me back. My own testing shows the RTX 3070 is the limiting component, so I'm considering upgrading to a Radeon RX 9070 XT first. The 13700KF still seems to perform well compared with newer gaming CPUs, but I'm concerned about the known 13th- and 14th-generation Intel stability issues. My BIOS is updated, the CPU is running at stock settings, and everything is stable. Does it make sense to upgrade the GPU now and replace the CPU and motherboard later?

Upgrade the GPU first. At 1440p, especially with your current settings and refresh-rate targets, the RTX 3070 is much more likely to be the limiting part. The 13700KF is still more than capable of driving a 9070 XT in most games.

That’s what I was thinking too. I mainly wanted reassurance before spending the money, since the GPU is clearly the bottleneck in my testing.

For gaming, the 13700KF should remain useful for several years. Don’t choose a CPU upgrade just because newer X3D chips are faster in benchmarks; what matters is whether your current processor delivers the frame rates you want in the games you play. Based on your own testing, it isn’t the part holding you back.

There’s no compelling reason to replace the 13700KF unless you actually see instability, performance problems, or signs of degradation. Keep the BIOS updated, use reasonable motherboard power and voltage settings, and monitor the system. A new CPU platform would cost quite a bit for only a modest gaming improvement, while the GPU upgrade should be immediately noticeable at 1440p.

I’m running the stock clocks with an updated BIOS, and the CPU has been stable. I’ll plan to replace the CPU and board later rather than making that the priority now.

Your resolution, refresh rate, settings, and specific games matter more than a general CPU comparison. Since you play at 1440p and have confirmed that the GPU is limiting performance, a graphics-card upgrade is the sensible next step. A much faster GPU could expose a CPU limit in some games, but the 13700KF is still strong enough that it shouldn’t be a major problem with a 9070 XT.
