I'm running a Ryzen 5 9600X, 16GB of DDR5 in a 2x8GB configuration, and a Radeon RX 9070 XT. I mainly play AAA games at 4K, and I can spend roughly the same amount on either a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or a 2x16GB DDR5 kit. Which upgrade would provide the more noticeable improvement?

Check your memory usage while playing. If it regularly reaches roughly 14–16GB, upgrading is worthwhile because Windows may rely heavily on the page file, which can hurt frame-time consistency and cause stutter. If you never approach the limit, the RAM upgrade may not change average FPS much, but 32GB is still the more sensible capacity for modern AAA games.
The 7800X3D would mainly help in CPU-limited games, high-refresh-rate gaming, or situations where you lower settings to push very high frame rates. At 4K with a 9070 XT, the difference will generally be small compared with adding memory, especially if your current system is running close to its 16GB limit.
Either upgrade could make sense in a specific scenario, but neither will transform 4K performance because the 9070 XT will be the main bottleneck most of the time. I’d buy the 2x16GB kit now and consider a faster CPU later when there’s a clearly worthwhile AM5 upgrade or prices drop.
Go with 32GB of RAM. At 4K, the 9600X is already a strong gaming CPU and you’ll usually be limited by the GPU before the processor. Several newer AAA games can use enough memory to cause paging, stutters, or slower texture loading when you only have 16GB.
My usage is usually around 10–15GB depending on the game, and I’ve noticed slower texture loading in a few titles. That makes the capacity issue seem more likely.

If you’re already well below the limit, reducing background processes can help, but it won’t solve situations where a game itself genuinely needs more than 16GB.
