Should I upgrade to AM4, AM5, or keep looking for an Intel motherboard?

I've been dealing with occasional performance drops where games stutter for a second or two and then return to normal. I haven't been able to identify the cause, so I'm wondering whether my motherboard could be the problem. My system has a Radeon RX 6800 XT, an Intel Core i5-10600K, and 32GB of DDR4 memory. I originally planned to replace the motherboard with a B560 model, but those seem to be unavailable in Denmark. I'm considering either moving to a DDR5 platform, which would require new memory, or switching to a B550 motherboard with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The AM4 option seems attractive for its price and gaming performance, but I'm unsure whether it makes more sense to invest in AM5 and DDR5 now, especially since DDR5 appears to be the direction new systems are taking. Am I overlooking a simpler or better option?

You don’t have to move to DDR5 just to stay with Intel. Some LGA1700 motherboards use DDR4, so you could reuse your current 32GB and buy a compatible 12th-, 13th-, or 14th-generation processor. DDR4 and DDR5 are motherboard-specific, though—you can’t use both types on the same board or upgrade from DDR4 to DDR5 later without replacing the motherboard. Availability and local pricing in Denmark will decide whether this is worthwhile.

Remember to check CPU-cooler compatibility before changing platforms. Your current cooler may need an AM4 or LGA1700 mounting kit, and the 5800X3D benefits from a decent tower air cooler. A normal quality air cooler is usually enough; you don’t automatically need liquid cooling, as long as temperatures remain under control.

Before replacing the platform, I’d verify the motherboard model and troubleshoot the stutter. A B150 board cannot normally run an i5-10600K because they use different CPU sockets, so one of those model numbers may be mistaken. Game stutters can also come from shader compilation, background tasks, storage problems, thermal throttling, drivers, or unstable memory. Check temperatures and clock speeds, GPU usage, frame-time graphs, and whether the issue happens in every game.

A Ryzen 7 5800X3D with a B550 board is still a strong gaming upgrade, especially if you can reuse your DDR4. However, it’s an older, end-of-line platform, so AM5 gives you a better future upgrade path. You don’t necessarily need 32GB of DDR5 immediately, but 32GB is preferable for a new gaming build if the price difference is reasonable. I wouldn’t replace the motherboard based only on the stutter unless testing points to it.
