I'm putting together a new system with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Radeon RX 9070 XT. I'd like to use Linux, but I still need Windows for work. For this hardware, would Windows 10 LTSC IoT or Windows 11 LTSC be the better choice? I'm especially interested in gaming performance, driver support, long-term compatibility, and avoiding unnecessary bundled software.

There are still people who prefer Windows 10 because they find Windows 11 buggy or annoying, and older systems can run it without trouble. However, for a brand-new gaming PC, driver and game support matter more than personal experience on an older laptop. Windows 11 is the more future-proof option, while Windows 10 LTSC mainly makes sense if you specifically value its long-term stability and simpler environment.
Windows 10 Education with extended security updates is another option if you prefer the older interface and want fewer bundled apps. Windows 11 Education is also relatively clean while still receiving newer updates. The main advantage of LTSC is stability and reduced extras, but it can lag behind regular releases in compatibility.
For a 9800X3D system, Windows 11 gives you the newer CPU and storage improvements. The difference may not be huge in every game, but Windows 11 should provide better long-term compatibility with current drivers, games, and software.
Windows 11 LTSC is probably the safer choice for this build. AMD’s newer processor optimizations and scheduling improvements are primarily focused on Windows 11, so Windows 10 may leave a small amount of performance on the table. Windows 10 LTSC can still run, but its older 21H2 base means game and application support will gradually become less predictable.
Windows 10 may cost roughly a few percent of performance on newer AMD processors because of less capable scheduling. That said, some people strongly prefer Windows 10’s interface and behavior, so the decision comes down to whether a small performance difference is worth using an older operating system.
Windows 10 LTSC may remain supported for years, but operating-system support does not guarantee that every future game, launcher, or driver will continue supporting it. That compatibility risk is the bigger concern for a new gaming build.
