Studied Software Engineering but Don’t Enjoy Coding—What Tech Careers Could Fit?

Sometimes the problem is not coding in general but a specific language, course, or type of assignment. Pay attention to what parts frustrate you and what parts you can tolerate. If debugging and building things are always draining, a role focused more on people, processes, testing, or technology planning may suit you better.

You probably shouldn’t build your entire career around something you genuinely dislike. That said, you don’t need to make an immediate all-or-nothing decision. Keep learning enough programming to understand the field, while exploring adjacent technology jobs to see what holds your interest.

It’s worth figuring out whether you dislike coding itself or just the kind of coding you’ve been doing. If programming consistently feels uninteresting and you have no desire to improve at it, forcing yourself into a developer role may not be the best choice. But being interested in technology still leaves you with plenty of options.

Tech has many careers that don’t involve writing software all day. You could look into technical support, hardware repair, software testing and quality assurance, systems or network administration, business analysis, project coordination, or product operations. Try a few small projects or talk to people in those roles before making a major decision.
