My older gaming PC was built before 2020 and has only received a few upgrades, including an RTX 3060 and a TEAMGROUP SSD. The original MSI B450 TOMAHAWK motherboard recently failed. A local repair shop replaced it with a Gigabyte B550 EAGLE WIFI6 motherboard, but that replacement appears to have failed in less than a week as well. The shop keeps saying AMD is unreliable and that I should replace the entire computer with an Intel-based system, so I'm worried I may be getting upsold.
My current parts are a Ryzen 5 2600X, 16 GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 memory, an RTX 3060 12 GB graphics card, a 600 W EVGA 80+ Bronze power supply, a Cooler Master MasterBox Lite 5 RGB ATX case, and three drives: a 2 TB hard drive, a 1 TB Samsung 980 NVMe SSD, and a 4 TB SATA SSD.
Could a failing power supply or another component be killing the motherboards? I'd like to troubleshoot this properly before buying anything else. If I do upgrade, can I keep the case, graphics card, storage, RAM, and power supply? Would it make more sense to stay on AM4 with a Ryzen 5000-series CPU, or move to AM5 or an Intel platform? I'm also considering waiting until the holidays if my current system can be made reliable in the meantime.

Before spending money on a new platform, have the power supply tested or substitute a known-good unit. A 600 W supply is sufficient for an RTX 3060 on paper, but age, damage, or an internal fault can still cause instability or board failures. Also test the system with only the essential parts connected: motherboard, CPU, one memory stick, graphics card if needed, and the boot drive. Inspect for shorts, loose standoffs, damaged cables, and incorrect front-panel connections.
The claim that AMD is inherently bad is not a useful diagnosis. The Ryzen 2600X is old, but AMD processors and motherboards are not normally expected to destroy themselves within days. If the shop cannot explain what failed on both boards, getting an independent diagnostic is safer than accepting a full-system upsell.
You can reuse almost all of the listed parts with another AM4 motherboard: the RTX 3060, all three drives, the case, and the DDR4 memory. You may need different mounting hardware for the CPU cooler, depending on the cooler and replacement board. Replacing the motherboard and CPU with a Ryzen 5000 chip would let you keep the current RAM and avoid a nearly complete rebuild.
Moving to AM5 would require a new motherboard, DDR5 memory, and a new CPU. Intel would likewise require a new motherboard and CPU, and possibly new memory depending on the platform. Neither option automatically requires replacing your case, graphics card, or drives.
Two boards failing so close together makes me suspicious of the power supply or another connected component rather than automatically blaming the motherboard. I’d stop installing replacement boards until the PSU and the rest of the system have been tested. Ask the shop to document exactly what failed, and consider returning the replacement board or getting a second opinion instead of immediately buying a whole new PC.
If the board is actually the only failed part, you don’t need to leave AM4. A Ryzen 5000-series processor would work with a compatible BIOS on a B550 board and would be a major improvement over the 2600X. A Ryzen 5 5500 is a budget option, while a Ryzen 7 5800X-class chip would provide a much larger upgrade without replacing your DDR4 memory or storage.
That was my concern too. The shop keeps insisting it is only the motherboard and is pushing me toward replacing everything, so I’m not fully confident in the diagnosis. I’d prefer to wait until the holidays if the system can be repaired safely.

So staying with AM4 would be the more economical route, while AM5 would mainly make sense if I want a newer upgrade path and am willing to replace the motherboard, processor, and RAM.
