I bought a prebuilt PC back in 2019, and I'm now looking to upgrade some components, but I'm not sure what's compatible. Here are my specs:
- CPU: Intel i5 9400
- GPU: RTX 2060
- Motherboard: Asrock B365
- 16 GB of RAM
I was considering getting an RTX 5070, but I've read that my CPU might bottleneck it. I need a new CPU and will likely need a new motherboard since it seems like no upgrades are compatible with my current motherboard. I don't need the highest-end setup, so I'm looking at an i7 from the 12th or 13th gen depending on pricing. I plan on getting a 750W PSU as well.
Do I need new RAM too? Is all RAM compatible with any motherboard? What else will I need? I want something that will last at least 5 years without breaking the bank. Thanks in advance!

You'll need new RAM; not all RAM is compatible with every motherboard. Also, don't forget to get a new PSU along with a cooler since you’re changing the CPU. It's likely going to turn into a full rebuild, considering how upgrading parts on a 6-year-old computer can be tricky. Seriously, you might end up needing a new case, some fans, and maybe even new storage like an NVMe SSD for better speed. Just something to think about!
You’re definitely going to need a new motherboard and RAM to upgrade your CPU. If you’re looking for a good place to start, consider a new build instead of just swapping parts. By the way, if you're in the US, hitting up a Micro Center could give you some great deals!
It might be worth looking at an AMD system since they often provide great performance for the price. Just keep in mind that if you want the RTX 5070, you’ll need a new platform to really utilize it effectively. Right now, the Intel LGA1851 platform has some good options. For instance, the Intel Core i5-12600K is a great deal. Just remember, you'll need to get a compatible motherboard and RAM to go with it!
The closest Micro Center is about 2 hours away.
