About a week ago, a brief power outage caused everything connected to my UPS—my PC, monitor, and speakers—to shut down. Power returned after roughly five seconds, and everything else in the apartment came back on, but the UPS and its connected devices stayed off. Normally, the UPS beeps and displays the estimated remaining runtime when the power fails, but this time it showed no signs of switching to battery power. The devices worked normally when plugged into a regular power strip, and holding the UPS power button brought it back on immediately.
I initially thought I might have accidentally turned the UPS off while trying to silence its frequent warning beeps, but it happened again while I was gaming and I know I did not press the button. Another short outage a few days earlier seemed to work normally, and the UPS reported about 112 minutes of remaining runtime, so I assumed the battery was healthy.
The UPS is about five years old, and I would rather not spend around $150 on a replacement if a battery swap would solve the problem. Could a failing battery cause this behavior even if the UPS reports a long runtime? Is it worth replacing the battery, or should I replace the entire UPS? My setup includes a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4080 Founders Edition, 64 GB of RAM, an ultrawide 144 Hz monitor, and a Logitech speaker system.

A worn-out battery is the most likely cause. Standard sealed lead-acid UPS batteries commonly last around two to four years, and five years is already a reasonable replacement interval. A battery can still report a large estimated runtime but fail the moment the UPS needs to supply a sudden burst of current. The estimate is not a reliable test of battery health.
Check the UPS model and its wattage rating before buying anything. A gaming PC with a 4080, monitor, and speakers can place a substantial load on a UPS, and an overload can make it drop out when switching to battery. If the UPS is adequately rated and the load is within its limits, the age and symptoms still point much more strongly to a failing battery.
The brief outage may have exposed a battery that had already been deteriorating. The UPS can sometimes run normally for a while, then shut down as soon as automatic voltage regulation or a power interruption makes it switch to battery. Try a proper self-test, but if the battery has never been replaced, replacing it with a correctly rated sealed lead-acid battery is a sensible first step. If the new battery does not fix it, the UPS electronics or battery-management circuitry may also be failing.
I would start with a replacement battery rather than immediately buying a new UPS, provided the unit is otherwise working and replacement batteries are available at a reasonable price. Use the exact voltage, dimensions, connector type, and chemistry specified for the UPS. Do not install a lithium battery in a UPS designed for lead-acid unless the manufacturer explicitly supports it, since the charging and protection systems may be incompatible. If the replacement battery fails quickly or the UPS continues shutting down, replace the whole unit.

That makes sense. I was treating the 112-minute estimate as proof that the battery was healthy, but it sounds like the UPS can still show a high estimate even when the battery cannot handle a sudden load.
