I'm choosing an AM5 motherboard for a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and want to avoid boards with a reputation for damaging or overvolting the CPU. My budget is around $200, and the board needs to fit an ATX case, although I'm also open to using a smaller micro-ATX board. Which brands or models would you recommend, and are there any I should avoid?

Since you have an ATX case, a full-size board will fit, but a micro-ATX model is also fine if it has the features and expansion slots you need.
I’d be cautious with ASRock if you’re specifically worried about the reports you’ve seen. Other major brands generally have more typical failure rates. For features, look for a board with a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot; that usually means B650E, X670E, X870, or X870E. B850 can work too, but check the exact model and wireless specification rather than buying solely by chipset.
The MSI B850 Tomahawk Max and Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite are both solid options near the $200 mark. Either should be a reasonable match for a 7800X3D, assuming the BIOS is up to date and the voltage settings are left sensible.
Gigabyte boards have worked well for me. Their Control Center and RGB utilities aren’t great, but the hardware itself has been reliable in my experience.
The MSI X870-P Pro WiFi is worth considering because it can cost less than the Tomahawk. The Tomahawk offers an additional PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, while the X870-P has USB4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 connectivity on the rear I/O.
