What are some good cases for mounting an ATX motherboard horizontally?

I'm wondering whether a horizontal motherboard layout might be a better design than the usual vertical arrangement. With a standard tower, the graphics card ends up hanging sideways, which can make supporting a heavy GPU awkward. Are there any good modern cases that support a full-size ATX motherboard mounted horizontally?

Another route is a 3U or 4U rackmount chassis. These commonly mount the motherboard horizontally and are sturdy, but they’re generally aimed at servers and can cost much more than consumer tower cases. Horizontal layouts were also more common back when computer cases were used as monitor stands.

The be quiet! Light Base 900 is designed to work in multiple orientations, so it’s worth considering if you want more flexibility than a conventional horizontal case. Some Thermaltake models also support different placements, though their motherboard orientation varies by model.

SilverStone has several cases worth checking out. The Grandia line is designed for home-theater PC builds and supports horizontal ATX layouts. The FLP-01 is another interesting option if you like a retro-looking case. Searching for HTPC or home-theater cases should turn up similar designs.

The Cooler Master HAF XB Evo was a popular choice for this layout, although it’s discontinued now. You may still find one used. The SilverStone GD11 is a more current-looking option that should fit what you’re after.

You may not need a horizontal motherboard just to solve GPU sag. A graphics card can be mounted vertically with the right case or riser, and there are plenty of inexpensive support brackets available. Many larger graphics cards also include some form of support in the box.
