What are the best free and paid resources to learn Docker, Kubernetes, and prepare for the CKA?

I'm a Linux system administrator at the L1 level and I'm new to containers and orchestration. I'd like to learn Docker and Kubernetes from the ground up, eventually preparing for the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exam. Could you recommend effective free and paid courses, documentation, videos, and hands-on labs? I also need an affordable way to build a practice environment because I can't pay for subscription-based training platforms. Ideally, I'd like to practice both basic concepts and realistic Kubernetes administration tasks.

You can build a useful practice lab at home without paying for hosted services. An older computer with enough memory can run a few virtual machines using a hypervisor such as Proxmox. Alternatively, use a local setup such as kind or Minikube for learning Docker and basic Kubernetes commands. For CKA preparation, make sure you also practice troubleshooting, deployments, services, storage, scheduling, RBAC, networking, and cluster maintenance under time limits. The official Kubernetes documentation and the exam curriculum are essential free resources.

For hands-on container practice, iximiuz Labs is a strong option. It provides guided playgrounds where you can experiment with containers and networking without risking your own machine. For structured CKA preparation, a popular Kubernetes administration course on Udemy is usually inexpensive during frequent sales and covers most of the exam objectives. Pair it with the official CKA curriculum and practice tasks so you learn the command-line workflow rather than only watching videos.

Are the iximiuz exercises mainly for lab practice, or do they also include a complete course?

They’re primarily hands-on labs, so they work best alongside a structured course or the official documentation.

A good progression is to start with Portainer’s Kubernetes learning material to understand the basic ideas, design patterns, and terminology. Once that foundation is clear, work through Kubernetes The Hard Way. It takes considerably longer, but building the components manually helps explain how the control plane, certificates, networking, and nodes fit together. It isn’t a direct CKA study guide, though, so use it for deeper understanding and combine it with exam-focused practice.
