What are the best ways to free up storage on an older laptop?

My laptop is about five years old, and I've never really done a proper cleanup. Recently I've started running low on storage. I've already deleted some personal files, but I'm sure there are temporary files, unused programs, duplicate files, or other large folders taking up space. What's a safe, practical routine for finding and removing unnecessary data without deleting anything important?

If the laptop has a small SSD, you can store large files or even some applications and games on an external SSD. That won’t clean up the internal drive by itself, but it can help prevent the same storage problem from coming back.

Move photos, videos, and other files you want to keep to an external hard drive or external SSD. It’s also worth checking for duplicate pictures and old downloads. Keep at least one backup before removing anything important, rather than treating the external drive as the only copy.

Start with Windows’ built-in Disk Cleanup or Storage settings and remove temporary files. Then uninstall programs and games you no longer use, since those can take up a surprising amount of space. A disk-usage tool such as TreeSize or WinDirStat can show which folders are actually using the most storage, so you’re not deleting files blindly.

A visual scanner like WizTree, TreeSize, or WinDirStat is really useful. Scan the main drive and look for unusually large folders or files. Check what they are before deleting anything—personal videos, installers, game libraries, and old backups are common space hogs, while system folders should generally be left alone.
