I'm studying programming and want to build practical experience once I finish my studies. I'm considering internships, personal or group projects, hackathons, networking with people who might provide referrals, certifications or bootcamps, and entering IT through roles such as help desk before progressing into a programming position. For recent graduates, what approaches actually helped you gain experience and improve your chances of getting hired?

Open-source work can be a good next step once you have a few fundamentals down. Start with manageable issues, improve documentation or tests, and gradually take on code changes. It gives you practice collaborating with other developers and working in an existing codebase.

The short version is: make stuff. A few complete, well-documented projects are usually more useful than a long list of unfinished tutorials or certificates. Try to show that you can plan, debug, test, and explain your decisions.

Build things on your own. Personal projects are one of the easiest ways to demonstrate what you can do before an employer gives you a chance. Choose projects that solve a real problem, finish them, and put the code and documentation somewhere employers can review it.

There’s a difference between general experience and professional IT experience. To get professional experience, you generally need a professional job; to get IT experience, look for an entry-level IT role. Help desk or support can be a reasonable route if you keep developing your programming skills and actively look for internal opportunities to move toward development.
