I'm completely new to web development and need a solid project for my resume as a final-year undergraduate. Where should I start, and are there any beginner-friendly tutorials or project ideas I can follow while still creating something I can confidently discuss in interviews?

Being beginner-friendly and resume-worthy aren’t opposites, but a tutorial alone won’t make a project stand out. Build a small version first, then add useful features such as search, filtering, validation, user accounts, responsive design, or an external API. The important part is that you understand every piece and can explain why you built it that way.

A project made by following a tutorial word for word usually isn’t very convincing on a resume. Employers tend to ask what you designed yourself, what went wrong, and how you solved it. Use tutorials to learn the tools, then change the idea or rebuild the project from scratch with features you chose.

That makes sense. I’ll use a tutorial for the basics, then add my own features and rebuild the important parts instead of just copying it.

Start with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript before jumping into a framework. Then make a full-stack project using something like React and Node, or use Supabase if you want to avoid setting up the backend yourself. Deploy it publicly, write a clear README, and explain one difficult bug or design decision you handled. Those details make the project much easier to discuss in an interview.

The Odin Project is a good free starting point because it covers HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and full-stack development through practical exercises. After the fundamentals, build one complete app with a database, such as a task tracker, personal finance tool, or blog with authentication. A simple idea is fine if you add a personal twist.
