What Can I Use Instead of Ethernet for a Smaller Wall Jack?

The wall jack is probably a telephone jack, such as RJ11 or RJ12, rather than an Ethernet jack. Ethernet plugs are wider and use an RJ45 connector, so there isn’t a smaller Ethernet cable that should be used with that outlet.

Check the label or markings on the wall plate. An Ethernet port is usually wider and may be labeled “Ethernet,” “LAN,” or “ data.” A smaller jack is typically for an old landline telephone, so you’ll need a proper Ethernet wall jack, a network cable run, or another networking option instead.

Ethernet cables normally have a standardized RJ45 plug, regardless of whether the cable is Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a. If the plug doesn’t fit, the wall port is likely not wired for Ethernet. Phone wiring generally can’t be used as a direct substitute for an Ethernet connection.
