I recently started running local AI tools such as Ollama, Open WebUI, and Docker, mostly by following AI-generated instructions. I was able to get things running from Windows PowerShell, but I often don't understand what the commands do, how the components connect, or whether everything was installed correctly. When something breaks, I don't have enough programming or computer science background to diagnose it myself. I'm currently trying to fix a connection problem between SearXNG and Open WebUI. What should I learn first?

Your current problem is probably more about Docker and basic networking than programming. Focus on ports, container networks, HTTP requests, and the difference between your computer’s localhost and a container’s localhost. Containers on the same Docker network can usually reach one another by service name, so Open WebUI may need to connect to something like `http://searxng:8080` instead of `http://localhost:8080`. Also check that SearXNG has JSON output enabled in its configuration, since it may be disabled by default. Useful troubleshooting habits include checking `docker logs ` and testing connectivity from inside the relevant container with `docker exec`.
For simply running a local model, you don’t need much programming. Installing Ollama and running a model starts a local server, usually on port 11434. Programming becomes more important when you want to build something around the model, such as a Python script that reads emails and classifies them. Start with basic command-line usage, Python fundamentals, and understanding how local services communicate, rather than diving straight into advanced computer science.

That gives me a much clearer starting point. I’ll focus on Docker networking, ports, and testing connections from inside the containers before trying to learn a lot of Python.
