I'm looking for advice on improving CPU performance in games. My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600 running with PBO and Curve Optimizer undervolting, an Endorfy Fortis 3 cooler, an RX 7800 XT, an MSI B450 Tomahawk, 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 memory in a 4×8GB configuration, and a 650W Gold-rated power supply. I play mostly single-player AAA games, MMOs, and some FPS titles at 1440p on a 180Hz monitor. I'm not chasing 180 FPS, but I would like to maintain roughly 80–100 FPS with better 1% lows and smoother frame pacing. At the moment, CPU-heavy scenes can cause sudden drops from around 80–100 FPS to 30–40 FPS, while CPU usage frequently sits between 80% and 100%. The result is inconsistent frame pacing and noticeable stutter, even when average FPS looks acceptable. I've already tested with a 2×16GB memory kit and saw the same behavior, so I don't think the issue is caused by using four memory sticks. CPU temperatures are also generally around 60–65°C. I'm considering either selling the current CPU and motherboard for about $200 and moving to a used or new Core i5-14600K/KF with a used B660 or B760 DDR4 board for roughly $400 total, or keeping the B450 board and buying a Ryzen 7 5800X3D for about $432. AM5 is not currently attractive because DDR5 is too expensive where I live, and ordinary Ryzen 5700X or 5800X models don't seem like a worthwhile upgrade for the price. Before spending $432 on a 5800X3D, check local prices for the 5700X3D and 5500X3D, including reputable imported or marketplace listings. In some regions they cost substantially less while delivering most of the gaming benefit. Any genuine X3D option compatible with your board should be a noticeable step up from the Ryzen 5 5600 in CPU-heavy scenes.
Look at the full AM4 X3D range rather than focusing only on the 5800X3D. A 5700X3D or 5500X3D may offer much better value depending on local prices, while still improving gaming lows over the Ryzen 5 5600. The 5700X3D gives you eight cores, whereas the 5500X3D and 5600X3D use six, so compare actual prices and availability in your region.
For a gaming-focused upgrade, the 5800X3D is the simplest and safest choice. It drops into your existing B450 platform, avoids buying a new motherboard and potentially replacing the cooler, and its extra cache can significantly improve frame-time consistency and 1% lows in CPU-limited games. Make sure the motherboard BIOS supports it and check that your board has an adequate BIOS version before swapping CPUs.
The Core i5-14600K/KF would be a stronger general-purpose processor, especially for workloads beyond gaming, but the platform change makes the upgrade more expensive and less straightforward. You would need to account for motherboard quality, power limits, cooling, and possible BIOS configuration. For your stated goal of smoother gaming on the existing system, an X3D chip is probably the better value unless the Intel bundle is unusually cheap.
