I recently remembered taking introductory programming courses where all the assignments were written in Scheme. Compared with languages such as Java or Python, Scheme has a very minimal syntax and emphasizes lists, recursion, functions, and operations like separating the first element of a list from the rest. At the time, it felt like practicing seemingly simple exercises without understanding how they connected to practical programming. What fundamental programming or computer science concepts are students meant to learn from Scheme, and why is it often chosen as a teaching language?

It depends on how the course is taught. Some students find the abstraction helpful, while others understand programming better after seeing state, variables, and concrete applications in a more conventional language. Scheme is useful because it isolates core ideas, but that does not mean it is the best first language for every learner.
