What free alternatives are there now that Freshdesk’s free plan is ending?

I received notice that Freshdesk is ending its free plan. I've generally liked the product and have recommended it before, but I'm not willing to pay for it right now. What free or self-hosted help desk and ticketing systems are people using instead?

Other options mentioned were GLPI, Request Tracker, LibreDesk, Spiceworks, and ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus. The best choice depends on whether you want something lightweight, fully self-hosted, or easier to deploy for a small team.

Zammad is a popular self-hosted replacement. It has a solid feature set and works well if you’re comfortable managing the server yourself.

You could also look at Znuny, the successor to the OTRS project, or OTOBO. Both are open-source ticketing platforms designed for self-hosting.

If Freshdesk has otherwise been working well, it may be worth asking their sales team about a small-business discount. We tried moving to Spiceworks after the free-tier limits changed, but eventually returned to Freshdesk and paid because it saved enough time to justify the cost.
