I recently realized I don't use my PC enough to justify keeping an RTX 4090, so I'm considering downgrading to something more practical. I mainly play Rocket League and Minecraft and would like a stable 165+ FPS at 1440p using low-to-medium settings. What graphics card would make the most sense without going overboard?

The RTX 5070 seems like a good middle ground. It should comfortably handle 1440p at well above 165 FPS in both games while still giving you enough performance for modern titles if your gaming habits change later.
If you want to spend less, a used RTX 3080, RTX 3080 Ti, or RX 6800 XT would be worth considering. They’re still more than powerful enough for Rocket League and Minecraft and can handle 1440p gaming broadly, though they may use more power than newer midrange cards.
Before selling the 4090, consider undervolting it or setting an FPS cap. That can reduce power use, heat, and noise without needing to replace the card. Keeping it may also be worthwhile if you don’t urgently need the money.
An RX 9070 or 9070 XT would also work well, particularly if pricing is better than the equivalent Nvidia cards in your area. They’re probably more performance than you need for these two games, but they offer plenty of future-proofing.
An RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT 16GB should be plenty for those games. Rocket League and standard Minecraft are relatively easy to run, so you don’t need another high-end card unless you use demanding shaders or want extra headroom for newer games.
Exactly. Those games are often more CPU-limited than GPU-limited, especially without extreme Minecraft shader packs.
