I've been using my PC since 2019 and it has served me well, but I'm starting to consider upgrading from my RTX 2080 Super. The system has an Intel i9-9900K and 64GB of DDR4 memory. I mainly play at 1440p, though I'd like the option to stretch to 4K. What GPU would be a sensible upgrade without the processor holding it back too much?

A current high-end card such as the Radeon RX 9070 XT would also work well. The processor won’t limit it in every game, particularly at 4K, so the best match depends more on pricing, power requirements, and whether you prefer features like ray tracing or frame generation.
The right choice depends heavily on your games, resolution, and target frame rate. At 1440p, a very high-end GPU can sometimes become CPU-limited with the i9-9900K, but it can still provide a major improvement over the 2080 Super.
An RTX 3080 Ti-class card would be a reasonable upper-end pairing if you want to avoid a severe CPU bottleneck. It should be a strong 1440p card and can handle 4K with sensible settings, especially when using upscaling.
You can technically pair the 9900K with something as powerful as an RTX 4090 and still benefit, especially at 4K. Just be aware that at 1440p and high refresh rates, CPU-heavy games may not reach the card’s full potential. In demanding multiplayer titles, the processor could become the limiting factor below 100 FPS during busy scenes.
I’m mainly targeting 1440p, but being able to play comfortably at 4K would be a nice bonus.
