What Happens to Existing AppleCare When Adding a MacBook to AppleCare One?

My iPhone's AppleCare coverage is expiring soon, and Apple is offering AppleCare One for $19.99 per month with coverage for up to three devices. I'm considering using it for my iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook. However, my MacBook still has an individual AppleCare plan that I purchased when I bought it in December 2025 for $229. If I add the MacBook to AppleCare One, will the remaining value of its existing plan be refunded or credited?

The existing plan should be prorated when the MacBook is moved to AppleCare One. If you paid for a multi-year plan directly through Apple, the remaining value is generally refunded as an Apple Gift Card. You can contact Apple if you want to ask about another refund method. Monthly or annual plans are typically refunded to the original payment method, while plans purchased through a third party may require proof of purchase.

Keep in mind that devices generally need to be within the eligibility window, usually no more than four years old. Apple may also require an inspection, either at a store or through a remote diagnostic process.

It’s worth comparing the total cost before switching. Depending on how much time remains on the MacBook’s existing coverage, keeping separate plans may be cheaper, even with the prorated refund.

You normally can’t keep a standalone plan alongside AppleCare One for the same device. The eligible devices are converted to the bundled plan, and the unused portion of the old coverage is prorated.
