I want to learn programming and am wondering what device would be practical for getting started. My 2013 MacBook has a failing battery that may be unsafe, and I mostly use an iPad Pro, Xbox, and phones for entertainment. I haven't used a laptop in years, so I'd appreciate advice on whether I need a new computer and what specifications are worth looking for.

Programming usually doesn't require powerful hardware unless you're doing things like 3D game development or other demanding workloads. For general learning, look for around 16 GB of RAM, an Intel i5 or Ryzen 5—or better—and an SSD with enough storage for your tools and projects. Eight GB can be acceptable if the memory can be upgraded. Recent Apple processors should also handle beginner programming well.
You can start with whatever you already have, even a phone or tablet with a coding app and tutorials. Older computers and simple devices are enough for basic programming practice, so don't wait for a perfect setup. That said, a dependable laptop with a full keyboard will be much more comfortable for serious study.
You can technically write code on almost anything that lets you edit text, but an old laptop with a failing battery will make the experience frustrating. A reasonably priced used ThinkPad or similar laptop would be a much better starting point. An iPad can work for simple exercises, but its software and keyboard limitations may get in the way.
That makes sense. I mainly want something reliable with a proper keyboard and operating system so the device doesn't become another obstacle.
