I'm a computer science student about to begin my fifth semester, with roughly 40 days before classes start. I've studied C fundamentals, advanced Java, basic Python, data structures, computer architecture, and object-oriented programming concepts such as encapsulation, abstraction, inheritance, and interfaces. However, most of my experience comes from coursework and relatively small assignments, so I feel there's a gap between understanding concepts and building a complete software system.
I can't take an internship right now, but I'd like to use this break to become a better programmer, learn how to structure a real project, practice OOP in a larger codebase, write cleaner and more maintainable code, and understand how different application components fit together.
Would it be more useful to spend the month on one substantial project, such as a cloud file-syncing tool, or to complete several smaller projects? I'm also open to other ideas, especially projects that involve persistence, user input, error handling, configuration, testing, and deployment.

A text-based adventure game is a good way to practice OOP without getting buried in infrastructure. You can model rooms, items, commands, players, and game state, then improve it with save files, tests, error handling, and a clean command-processing design. The important part is treating it like a real project rather than just writing everything in one file.
Several small, finished projects are probably a better fit for 40 days than one ambitious system. Pick a project, write down its features, and then deliberately cut the list down until the scope is manageable. Finishing a few focused projects will teach you more about planning, iteration, and cleanup than ending the break with a large unfinished codebase.
A small web application could also be useful, such as a login and sign-up service or a personal tracker. Choose one language and framework, use version control consistently, write a short plan with user stories, and deploy the finished result somewhere. Reading documentation and debugging issues yourself will be more valuable than blindly copying generated code.
You could also build a practical route-planning project. Start with a graph and a shortest-path algorithm, then add factors such as travel time, congestion, or user preferences. This gives you a concrete reason to apply your data-structures knowledge while learning how to design an interface, manage input data, test edge cases, and separate the algorithm from the rest of the application.
Build something that solves a problem you actually have or would genuinely use. That gives you a reason to handle the parts coursework often skips, such as persistence, file I/O, validation, error handling, configuration, and changing requirements. A small local file-sync tool could work well because it introduces state management and practical constraints without requiring a full cloud platform.
