I'm clearing out a very small room at my parents' house in rural Ireland and have found a large collection of old electronics. There are consoles and games from systems such as the N64, PlayStation 1 and 2, GameCube, and PSP, along with controllers, assorted power leads, unidentified cables, and several old phones, including Nokia and Motorola models. Some devices are missing cables or accessories, so I can't easily test whether they work. I might keep the N64, but I need to get rid of most of the rest and don't have much storage space. What is the best way to sort, sell, donate, or environmentally dispose of these items? Are miscellaneous cables worth saving for their metal, or should they simply go to an electronics recycling facility?

Take the unwanted electronics to your local civic amenity site or household waste recycling centre and use the designated e-waste area. Old phones, consoles, chargers, and cables should not go in ordinary rubbish if you want them handled properly. Retailers that sell electrical goods may also accept certain items for WEEE recycling, so it’s worth checking nearby options before making the trip.
For cables you can’t identify, read the labels and connector type, then search the model numbers if there are any. It’s fine to keep one or two examples of common standards, but there’s little reason to store piles of duplicates. Unusual mini-USB, camera, or older proprietary leads can still help someone, so they’re better offered for free than thrown straight in general waste.
The problem is that quite a few have no obvious markings, and I can’t work out what they belong to. I’ll keep a small selection of unusual ones and stop trying to identify every identical-looking cable.
Before recycling or giving away the phones, remove SIM and memory cards and factory-reset them. For consoles and games, list complete or recognizable sets separately because they may be useful to collectors, while incomplete bundles can be offered cheaply or for free. Don’t spend more on replacement cables than the item is realistically worth unless you actually want to keep it.
I’d definitely prefer a proper recycling option rather than putting everything in the bin. I’ll check which local facility accepts electronic waste.
