What Should I Learn First Before Building a Serious Mobile App?

I'm starting from almost zero with programming, but my long-term goal is to build my own complex mobile app. I don't expect to become a professional software engineer immediately, but I do want to understand enough to build the project properly. Should I begin with programming fundamentals, data structures, databases, APIs, and Git before learning a framework such as Flutter, or is it better to start building small projects right away and learn those concepts along the way? I'm also unsure whether I should focus on Android, iOS, or a cross-platform approach.

You don’t have to finish months of theory before touching app development. Pick a beginner-friendly Flutter tutorial and start making small things immediately. You’ll run into programming concepts naturally, and fixing mistakes can make them easier to understand. Just avoid starting with the full complex app—build tiny features first and expand from there.

That makes sense. Starting with small Flutter projects seems less intimidating than trying to learn every topic before writing any code.

Keep the KISS principle in mind: start with the simplest version of the idea. Build a small prototype, then learn the fundamentals you need as the project grows. Programming basics, version control, APIs, data storage, and debugging are all worth learning, but they’ll be much easier to absorb when you can apply them to a real project instead of studying everything in isolation.

Choose your target platforms before choosing a technology. Android development commonly uses Kotlin, while iOS development uses Swift and generally requires access to macOS for normal development and distribution. If you want one shared codebase for multiple platforms, Flutter with Dart is a solid beginner-friendly option. React Native, .NET MAUI, Ionic, and Kotlin Multiplatform are other possibilities, but your choice should match your goals and any experience you already have.

Cross-platform tools can be useful for learning, but they don’t completely remove platform-specific details. You’ll still need to understand how Android and iOS differ when the app becomes more advanced.
