I'm planning my next upgrade and want to improve gaming performance, especially keeping frame rates stable during intense scenes. I don't need to play everything at maximum settings, but I really dislike noticeable frame drops. My current system has an Intel Core i5-6402P, 16GB of DDR4-2400 RAM, an RTX 3050 6GB, and an ASUS H170-PRO/CSM motherboard. Which component would make the biggest difference?

I wouldn’t make RAM the first upgrade. Going from 16GB to 32GB can help with some newer games and multitasking, but it won’t overcome the limits of the older CPU. Upgrade to a current CPU and compatible motherboard first, then consider faster or larger memory if your usage actually needs it.
The processor and motherboard are probably the best place to start. That sixth-generation i5 can hold back the RTX 3050 in newer games and high-refresh-rate situations. You’d need a newer platform to upgrade the CPU, so plan on replacing the motherboard as well. Your 16GB of RAM is still usable, and adding more memory probably won’t fix frame drops unless a particular game is running out of it.

Would moving from a DDR4 platform to DDR5 make a major difference, or is DDR5 only a small improvement over DDR4? I’ve also heard people mention DDR6, but I’m not sure whether that’s relevant yet.
