I'm 19 and starting from zero programming experience. I recently began the CS50 Python course, but I'm unsure what to do after finishing it. I'd like to choose a practical direction that could eventually pay well and possibly help me earn money while completing my bachelor's degree. Is knowing some Python enough to get hired or find useful opportunities, or do I need to build specific projects and skills first? I've also considered AI automation, but my main goal is to become useful enough to contribute financially rather than relying entirely on my family. I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has been in a similar position, especially about realistic career paths, projects, internships, campus jobs, or other ways to gain experience.

One course is a good start, but employers generally pay for the problems you can solve—not simply for knowing a programming language. Try exploring a few areas before committing, such as web development, data analysis, automation, or research. Then choose a small but useful project and build something that demonstrates the skill. A clear roadmap will also help you avoid spending months learning tools for a field you may not actually enjoy.
If you’re enrolled in college, look into undergraduate research positions, campus technology jobs, tutoring, and summer internships. Internships are especially valuable because they provide experience, income, and something credible to put on your résumé. Keep your academic work as the priority, and treat programming-related income as something you build toward rather than something guaranteed immediately after one introductory course.
Getting paid as a complete beginner while studying is possible, but it’s usually difficult and takes persistence. A practical approach is to find a narrow problem that a specific group of people has and solve it with software—for example, automating a repetitive workflow or creating a specialized tool. The more concrete the result, the easier it is to show potential clients or employers what you can do. Don’t count on this alone to fund college, though; it may take time before a small project becomes a reliable income source.
Programming can also make you more valuable in a non-programming job. Someone who understands Python, spreadsheets, data cleanup, automation, version control, testing, and basic software design can improve processes in an office, lab, clinic, or small business. Learn to understand the real business problem, design a maintainable solution, and verify that it works. Those skills remain useful even when tools powered by AI generate much of the code.
Be realistic about the timeline: knowing a little Python usually isn’t enough by itself to get hired. You’ll need evidence that you can complete projects, troubleshoot problems, work with other people, and learn independently. AI tools may make simple coding tasks easier, so focus on understanding requirements, checking output, and building reliable solutions rather than presenting AI automation as a shortcut to instant income.

That makes sense. I hadn’t considered finding a job where programming could be a useful extra skill instead of trying to compete for a pure software role immediately.
