I'm building my first PC and have about £1,000 to spend on the system itself. I'm based in the UK and already own an AOC Q27G3XMN 27-inch 1440p 180Hz monitor. Since I'm a university student living in temporary accommodation and may move each year, I'd prefer a reasonably small and portable Mini-ITX build.
I mainly play Apex Legends, Marvel Rivals, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and other open-world AAA games. I'd like high frame rates in competitive shooters so I can make good use of the 180Hz display, while still getting high settings and smooth performance in demanding single-player games. My current device is a 512GB Steam Deck OLED, so I'm hoping for a substantial upgrade in image quality and performance.
I'm unsure how best to divide the budget between the CPU, graphics card, motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, and the extra costs associated with small-form-factor parts. What components and Mini-ITX cases would you recommend for roughly £1,000? Is that budget realistic, and what compromises should I expect?

Mini-ITX is possible, but it comes with a noticeable small-form-factor premium. The motherboards and cases usually cost more, and cooling options are more restricted. Micro-ATX would give you substantially better value at this price, with cheaper boards, more affordable coolers, and a much wider choice of cases. A compact Micro-ATX case can still be fairly portable while leaving more of the budget for the GPU.
For this budget, the graphics card should receive the largest share of the money. A six-core Ryzen 5 such as the 7600X-class models, 16GB of DDR5, a 2TB NVMe SSD, and a good 750W power supply would be a sensible starting point. A card around the RX 9060 XT 16GB level could work well for 1440p, although a higher-end option such as an RX 9070 would make the budget much harder to meet. Use a compatibility planner carefully because Mini-ITX cases have strict limits for GPU length, CPU-cooler height, radiator support, and PSU format.
You may need to choose between the smallest possible case and the best 1440p performance. A current AM5 platform gives you a better future upgrade path, but fitting it into £1,000 may require starting with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, then upgrading later. An older AM4 build can be cheaper and leave more money for the graphics card, though it has less room for future CPU upgrades. Either way, plan for strong airflow and verify every component’s dimensions before buying.

That makes sense. I’m mainly considering Mini-ITX because I expect to move frequently, but I’ll compare compact Micro-ATX cases before deciding.
