What’s the best budget upgrade for my Ryzen 3 and RX 7700 XT build?

I recently started considering a PC upgrade as a birthday treat, but I'm new to PC hardware and need to keep costs reasonable. My current system has an ASRock A320M/ac motherboard, a Ryzen 3 3100, 32GB of RAM, a 224GB SSD, a 1TB hard drive, and an RX 7700 XT with 12GB of VRAM. I mainly use it for gaming and digital art. It handles newer games at medium to low settings, but I'd like to improve performance without spending as much as a completely new gaming system. Which upgrade would make the biggest difference for the money?

A CPU upgrade is the simplest move right now. Look at the Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700, and consider an X3D model such as the 5700X3D if you find one at a reasonable price. Watch for sales on older Ryzen chips, since discounted AM4 processors can be excellent value. The RX 7700 XT should be capable of high settings at 1080p once the processor is no longer holding it back.

You can keep the A320 motherboard for now; replacing it with a B-series board isn’t necessary unless you need additional features. If you find a good deal, a Ryzen 5 5600X3D or Ryzen 7 5700X3D would give you more longevity, though the 5600 is the better value on a tight budget. Also consider replacing the 224GB SSD with a larger one. Games load much faster from an SSD than from the hard drive, and 224GB fills up very quickly.

The motherboard should be fine for a Ryzen 5000 upgrade as long as the BIOS is updated first. I’d prioritize the CPU, then add a larger SSD when the budget allows.

The Ryzen 3 3100 is probably the biggest limitation, especially with an RX 7700 XT. A Ryzen 5 5600 is usually an affordable drop-in upgrade for this platform and should noticeably improve game performance. Update the motherboard BIOS before replacing the CPU, and check that the BIOS version supports Ryzen 5000 processors.
