What’s the best DDR4 CPU upgrade for my Ryzen 7 1700 system?

I'm still using the Ryzen 7 1700 from my original build, and it's becoming a serious limitation. My system has 64GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4, an RTX 3080 10GB, an MSI B350M PRO-VDH motherboard, and an 850W power supply. I mainly use the PC for productivity tasks such as game development, video editing, and 3D work, but I also play games. I'd like to keep my 64GB of DDR4 rather than move to a DDR5 platform. What would be the best CPU upgrade for this use case? I'm open to replacing the motherboard if necessary, although keeping the existing board would be preferable if it can safely handle the upgrade.

If gaming is the main priority, the 5800X3D is the best AM4 gaming upgrade and should work with many older boards after the correct BIOS update. For your stated productivity use, though, the 5700X, 5800X, or 5950X makes more sense depending on your budget and how much your applications use multiple cores. Another option is an Intel 12th- or 13th-generation system with a DDR4 B660, B760, or Z-series motherboard, which lets you reuse the memory while moving to a newer platform.

For a mix of productivity and gaming, the Ryzen 9 5950X is the strongest AM4 option for heavily multithreaded workloads. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is generally the better gaming chip, but it has only eight cores and can lose to the 5950X in video editing, rendering, compiling, and other sustained workloads. A Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X is usually the better value if your work doesn’t benefit from sixteen cores.

Your B350 board may support Ryzen 5000 after a BIOS update, but check MSI’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before buying anything. The board’s VRM is fairly modest, so I’d be cautious about running a 5950X or another high-power processor under prolonged full load. A 5700X is a safer drop-in upgrade, while a 5800X or 5950X would be better paired with a newer B550 board and a capable CPU cooler. Good airflow around the motherboard is important too.

I upgraded a first-generation Ryzen system to a 5950X on the same generation of motherboard and it worked well, but I still wouldn’t assume every B350 board will handle that workload equally. The exact VRM design, BIOS version, cooling, and case airflow matter.
