What’s the best way to add Wi‑Fi to my new PC?

I've just finished my first PC build and only now realized that my motherboard doesn't include Wi‑Fi. I found several USB adapters online, but their descriptions mostly talk about boosting an existing signal, so I'm not sure what I actually need. My motherboard is an MSI PRO B650M-P. Should I use a USB adapter or an internal PCIe card, and what features should I look for?

If possible, Ethernet is still the most stable choice for gaming and large downloads. If running a network cable isn’t practical, Wi‑Fi is fine—just make sure the adapter supports a modern standard such as Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 and has decent antenna placement.

You want a Wi‑Fi adapter, not a range extender. A USB adapter is the simplest option, while a PCIe Wi‑Fi card is usually faster and more reliable if you have an open slot. Look for one with external antennas and support for your router’s Wi‑Fi standard.

A USB adapter can work perfectly well, especially one with a detachable or larger antenna that you can position away from the back of the computer. It’s also easier to install and doesn’t require opening the case.

The MSI PRO B650M-P has a PCIe x1 slot, so a PCIe Wi‑Fi card should work as long as your graphics card isn’t blocking access. These cards are generally inexpensive and often include Bluetooth too.
