I have two used 8GB DDR4 sticks and one 16GB stick, all rated at 2400MHz. Matching RAM is expensive, so I'm trying to make the most of what I already have. My motherboard is an MSI B550 Gaming Plus with a Ryzen 5 5600X. How should I arrange the modules for the best performance? Would A1: 8GB, A2: 8GB, B1: empty, and B2: 16GB be the right setup? For dual-channel operation, does the total capacity simply need to match between the two memory channels?

That layout is the best one to try: put the two 8GB sticks in A1 and A2, leave B1 empty, and install the 16GB stick in B2. That gives each channel 16GB total, so the full 32GB can potentially run in dual channel. It also keeps the commonly recommended A2/B2 slots populated first. Check the motherboard manual because the exact slot guidance matters.
RAM does not have to be identical, but matched kits are tested to work together, while separately sourced sticks may not cooperate perfectly. Make sure the BIOS detects all 32GB, then test with a memory diagnostic. If problems appear, run everything at a lower speed rather than assuming the modules are faulty.
Use the two 8GB modules together on one channel and the 16GB module on the other, rather than putting one 8GB stick on each channel. Start with A1 and A2 for the 8GB sticks and B2 for the 16GB stick, then run a memory test after enabling the setup. Even modules with the same advertised speed can have different chips and timings, so stability isn’t guaranteed.
The important part is matching the total capacity per channel, not necessarily having identical sticks. With 16GB on each channel, all of the installed memory can run in dual channel if the system accepts the configuration. Mixed modules can be less stable, though, so you may need to lower the memory speed or loosen the timings if it crashes or refuses to boot.

If the channel totals do not match, the system can usually use flex mode: the matching portion runs in dual channel and the remainder runs in single channel. For example, an 8GB stick paired with a 16GB stick would give 16GB in dual channel and 8GB in single channel.
