What’s the Best Way to Securely Wipe a USB Drive Before Returning It?

I bought a USB stick that turned out to be faulty. I deleted some photos from it, but recovery software can still find them. Since I'm returning the drive and it may be resold, what's the best way to wipe it so the deleted files can't be recovered?

If the photos are extremely sensitive, the most reliable option is not to return the physical drive at all. Flash drives can retain data in locations that normal formatting cannot reach, so physically destroying the device is the only certain solution.

The practical approach is to perform a full, non-quick format, or overwrite the drive with large files you don’t need and then delete them. A single complete overwrite is generally enough to prevent ordinary recovery attempts, and repeating it usually adds little benefit.

Use a reputable drive-wiping utility and select its full-overwrite option. One pass is normally sufficient for typical personal photos. USB flash storage uses wear leveling, though, so software wiping cannot guarantee that every old memory cell is erased.
