My motherboard has only two onboard NVMe slots, but I recently bought a third NVMe SSD. I tried installing it with a PCIe expansion card, but afterward the computer became very stuttery and crashed several times. What's the most reliable way to use the drive without causing performance or stability problems?

A PCIe-to-NVMe adapter is usually the proper solution, but you need to confirm that your motherboard has an available PCIe slot with enough lanes. Ideally, use a PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 x4 slot, depending on the SSD. Check the motherboard manual because some slots share bandwidth with other devices or may be disabled in certain configurations.
If there is no suitable PCIe slot, a USB NVMe enclosure is another option. It will be slower than an internal PCIe connection, but it can work well for backups or files that do not need maximum speed. A USB 20 Gbps or 40 Gbps port will give much better performance than ordinary USB.
You could also return the NVMe drive and buy a 2.5-inch SATA SSD instead. It will be slower, but it avoids lane-sharing issues and is simple to install if your case and motherboard have an available SATA port.
The stuttering and crashes suggest the expansion card could be faulty, poorly made, or incompatible rather than PCIe-to-NVMe adapters being inherently unreliable. Try a different adapter from a reputable brand and update the motherboard BIOS and storage drivers. Since the new drive is not your boot drive, it normally should not cause the whole system to become unstable.
