2280 drives are much more common and usually give you more choices, while 2242 drives can be harder to find and may have fewer high-performance options. If both sizes are supported, compare the actual drive specifications and choose based on capacity, price, endurance, and supported PCIe generation—not just the form factor.
The numbers describe the drive’s dimensions in millimeters: 22 mm wide and either 42 mm or 80 mm long. The formats are electrically similar, so the size itself doesn’t determine performance. Speed depends on the SSD model, controller, NAND, and the PCIe generation supported by your laptop.
