What’s the most cost-effective way to make my 5800X3D PC quieter?

My system has a Ryzen 7 5800X3D cooled by a Thermalright Peerless Assassin with its included fans, a Radeon RX 9070, and a Cooler Master MasterCase H500. The case has a mesh front, two 200 mm intake fans, and one 120 mm rear exhaust fan. Cable management is tidy, and I clean out the dust every few months.

The main problem is the CPU cooler noise. It becomes extremely loud during shader compilation, installations, and CPU-heavy games—almost like a jet engine. Temperatures are within the normal range for an X3D processor, but lowering the fan curve makes the CPU run hotter and causes frequent ramping.

Would replacing the Peerless Assassin fans with quieter models make a significant difference? I have also considered replacing the case fans with several 120 mm fans, but I'm unsure whether that would improve airflow or noise. An AIO is another possibility, although I'm concerned about leaks, reliability, and maintenance since I've never used liquid cooling.

What would be the best low-cost way to reduce the noise without compromising temperatures too much?

An AIO is a sealed unit and normally doesn’t require refilling; custom loops are the type that need filling and maintenance. However, it isn’t automatically quieter. Pump noise and radiator fans can be audible, and a good air cooler with better fans and a sensible curve can be quieter and more reliable. I’d try undervolting and replacing the cooler fans first.

You may be able to solve most of this just by changing the fan curve. Case fans don’t need to chase every brief CPU temperature spike, and the 200 mm intakes should provide plenty of airflow at low RPM. Try keeping the CPU fan around 25–30% through the lower temperature range, below 50% until roughly 60–65°C, and reserve higher speeds for sustained temperatures around 80–90°C. You can also reduce the CPU power limit slightly if needed.

The stock Thermalright fans can have a pretty harsh noise profile. Swapping the two cooler fans for Arctic P12s, Phanteks T30s, be quiet! Silent Wings, or similar quality fans can make a noticeable difference, usually with only a small temperature increase. You could also use the same model on the rear exhaust for consistency.

Try undervolting before buying anything. The 5800X3D often responds very well to Curve Optimizer, and a negative offset can reduce heat and fan speed while maintaining or even improving boost behavior. Start conservatively, such as -10 or -15, test stability, and then adjust further if it remains stable. It’s not dangerous to experiment with—the usual result of an overly aggressive setting is a crash or failed workload, after which you can use a less negative value.

The large front fans are probably not the issue. Their low RPM makes them well suited for quiet airflow, so replacing them with four 120 mm fans may not help. Focus on the Peerless Assassin fans and the CPU’s heat output. A negative Curve Optimizer setting, a moderate fan curve, and a reasonable power limit should give you the biggest improvement for the least money.
