I'm choosing between RAM kits rated at CL30 and CL38 and want to know which is better. I'm using a Ryzen 5 9600X, but I'm not sure how much CAS latency matters compared with memory speed, capacity, and overall compatibility. Is CL30 worth paying more for, or will CL38 perform about the same?

For a Ryzen 5 9600X, DDR5-6000 is generally a sensible target because it tends to offer a good balance of speed, latency, stability, and compatibility. A DDR5-6000 CL30 kit is preferable to DDR5-6000 CL38, but the performance difference is typically only a few percent at most. Capacity and having a stable memory profile matter more than chasing a tiny latency improvement.
CL30 is better on paper, but don’t focus on the CL number alone. Check the full specification, especially the data rate and timings. A higher-speed kit can sometimes perform well despite having a higher CL rating, but very high memory speeds may be harder for the CPU’s memory controller to run reliably. For most builds, a reasonably priced DDR5-6000 kit with good timings is the practical choice.
CL means CAS latency, so a lower number is generally better. However, you also need to consider the RAM’s speed. For example, DDR5-6000 CL30 and DDR5-6400 CL32 have roughly the same real-world latency. If both kits run at the same speed, CL30 is the better choice, but the difference is usually small in gaming.
