Which 32GB DDR5 kit makes the most sense for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D?

A 9800X3D is not guaranteed to run DDR5-6400 reliably. Memory-controller quality, motherboard layout, BIOS settings, and temperatures can all matter. The advantage of buying the 6400 kit is that you can usually run it at 6000 with tighter timings if necessary, but check that the seller’s kit is in good condition and has a return option.

The 6400 CL32 kit is the sensible middle ground. It costs only £40 more than the CL40 kit and should use capable memory chips, while the £360 CL30 kit is too expensive for the likely gain. You could also run the 6400 kit at 6000 with a 1:1 memory-controller ratio and tune the timings if 6400 proves unstable.

The rated primary timings alone don’t tell the whole story, and benchmarks with this processor usually show very modest differences between these kits. I’d prioritize stability, capacity, warranty, and whether the memory is on the motherboard’s support list over chasing the lowest CL number.

The 6400 CL32 and 6000 CL30 kits have very similar latency, so I wouldn’t pay £60 extra for the 6000 CL30 option. The 6400 kit looks like the best value at these prices, although the performance difference will be small with a 9800X3D.

For gaming, I’d probably buy the cheapest kit unless you specifically want to tune memory. The X3D cache reduces how much faster memory matters, and the difference between CL40 and CL30 is often only a small number of frames.
