Which AM5 motherboard is best for a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and future upgrades?

I'm planning to build a system around a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and want a motherboard that won't feel outdated if I upgrade to a later Zen-generation processor around 2027–2029. I'm having trouble deciding between the available options. Should I look at B850 or X870, and are there any specific models or features worth prioritizing for long-term use?

Choose the form factor and connectivity you need first. ATX gives you more room for expansion than micro-ATX, and 2.5Gb Ethernet is worth having if your network supports it. The Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite Wi-Fi 7 ATX is a well-equipped option, although it may cost more than necessary for a 7800X3D build.

The MSI B850 Tomahawk Max and Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite are both strong choices. They offer a good balance of power delivery, connectivity, and features without going overboard on price. The Tomahawk in particular is an excellent value option.

B850 or X870 are the sensible chipsets to consider if long-term upgrade support is your priority. Models from MSI, Gigabyte, and ASUS should all be fine, so compare the specific board’s VRM cooling, BIOS features, storage expansion, and rear I/O instead of focusing only on the chipset name.

Any AM5 board that supports the future processors should technically work with Zen 6, and possibly later chips if AMD keeps using the socket. For a new purchase, I’d lean toward a B850 board with at least three M.2 slots rather than buying a basic entry-level B650 model.

The main concern isn’t only socket compatibility. A newer board is more likely to have suitable BIOS support, power delivery, and connectivity for higher-end processors released several years from now.
