I found several refurbished graphics cards locally, all with a warranty, and I'm trying to choose the best price-to-performance option for my AM4 system with a Ryzen 5 5600 and 32GB of RAM. The choices are an RTX 3070 for $200, an RTX 3080 for $320, or a Radeon RX 7800 XT for $360. I mainly play at 1080p, though I may move to 1440p later. Which card makes the most sense, considering performance, VRAM, the possibility of a CPU bottleneck, and long-term value?

For strictly 1080p gaming, the RTX 3070 is the most balanced match for the Ryzen 5 5600 and costs much less. It should deliver high frame rates without as much CPU limitation, but its 8GB of VRAM is the weakest point and could require reduced texture settings in newer games. The 3080 or 7800 XT may be overkill right now, but that extra performance can be useful if you upgrade to a faster AM4 CPU or move to 1440p later.
CPU bottlenecking shouldn’t be the deciding factor when the price difference is this favorable. At $360, the 7800 XT gives you substantially more longevity than the 3070, and you can address the CPU limitation later with an AM4 upgrade such as a Ryzen 7 5700X3D. Assuming the warranty is genuine and the card passes testing, I’d pick the 7800 XT.
The RTX 3080 is also a solid option, especially for demanding single-player games or if you care about NVIDIA features and ray tracing. It should handle 1080p extremely well and can still perform nicely at 1440p. The main drawback is the 10GB of VRAM, which is becoming less comfortable in newer games, plus higher power consumption. At $320, it’s reasonable, but the 7800 XT’s extra VRAM and newer design make it the better long-term value if both cards are in similar condition.
The RX 7800 XT is the strongest deal if the refurbished card has been properly tested. It generally beats the RTX 3080 in traditional rasterized gaming, has 16GB of VRAM, and gives you plenty of room for a future 1440p upgrade. The Ryzen 5 5600 may limit it in some 1080p games, but that doesn’t make the card a bad purchase— you can upgrade the CPU later without replacing the GPU. Ray tracing performance is not the main reason to choose this card, so avoid relying heavily on path tracing or maximum ray-traced settings.
I already have a high-quality 850W power supply, so power requirements shouldn’t be an issue for any of these cards.
