I have an older Toshiba Satellite L400 with 2GB of RAM and a 32-bit processor. It currently runs Windows 7, but I'd like to use it for programming and everyday tasks. This is my first time trying Linux, so I'm looking for something lightweight, stable, and reasonably easy for a beginner to use. What distributions would work well on this hardware?

You could also look at lightweight distributions such as SparkyLinux with an Openbox or LXDE desktop, or Tiny Core if you want something extremely minimal. The trade-off is that the lighter the system, the more configuration may be required.

Q4OS is worth trying if ease of use is your priority. It still offers a 32-bit version and has a familiar desktop layout, making the transition from Windows less intimidating. Puppy Linux is another very lightweight option, though its workflow can feel less conventional.

antiX would be one of my first choices. It is based on Debian, runs well on older 32-bit hardware, and uses relatively little memory. It should be much more comfortable on that laptop than a full desktop distribution.

Linux Mint is beginner-friendly, but its normal desktop may feel sluggish with only 2GB of RAM, especially on a 32-bit CPU. I would start with antiX or Q4OS rather than Arch or another distribution that requires more manual setup, since this is your first Linux installation.

Before installing anything, check whether the processor is genuinely 32-bit or whether only the existing Windows installation is 32-bit. Many current distributions no longer support 32-bit CPUs. Try a few compatible systems from a bootable USB first, and choose the one that recognizes the laptop’s hardware and feels responsive.
