I'm completely new to Linux and am moving over from Windows. I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM and would like to learn Linux without spending much money on upgrades. Ideally, I'd like a distribution that is beginner-friendly and works reasonably well out of the box, since I've heard older MacBooks can sometimes have driver and hardware-compatibility issues. What would you recommend?

A lightweight edition of Zorin OS is another beginner-friendly option. It has a familiar desktop layout and can run well on older machines, although Mint XFCE is probably the safer starting point for 4GB of RAM.
I’d look at Linux Mint XFCE or Lubuntu. Both are approachable for beginners, use fewer resources than heavier desktop environments, and should be a good fit for a 2010 MacBook Pro.
When installing, connect the MacBook to your router with an Ethernet adapter if possible. A wired connection can let the installer download firmware or other hardware support it needs, and it may avoid wireless problems during setup.
Linux Mint is a solid choice for older hardware. The Cinnamon edition should work, but Mint XFCE would be lighter and may feel more responsive with only 4GB of RAM.
Would any version of Mint XFCE work, or should I look for a specific release?
