I'm looking to replace Windows 10 on an older Lenovo B50-80 (80EW). It has an Intel Core i3-5005U processor, 8 GB of RAM, Intel HD 5500 graphics plus an AMD Radeon R5 M330, and a traditional hard drive. Which Linux distribution and desktop environment would give me a smooth, beginner-friendly experience?

If you want something lighter while keeping things beginner-friendly, try Lubuntu or Xubuntu. Linux Mint XFCE and Debian with XFCE are also good choices for older hardware and should use fewer resources than heavier desktop environments.

Mint is especially easy to get used to because its layout and tools feel familiar to Windows users.

You could also use Ubuntu, Fedora, or regular Linux Mint without any major hardware problems. This system is modest but not extremely old, and 8 GB of RAM is enough for a normal desktop. Your choice will mostly come down to which interface and software style you prefer.

The best approach is to create a bootable USB drive and test a few distributions in live mode before installing. Try Mint, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, or Debian XFCE and see which one feels comfortable. A live session can also help confirm that the Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, and touchpad work properly.

The laptop should handle nearly any mainstream Linux distribution. The hard drive will be the biggest performance bottleneck, so replacing it with an SSD would make a much larger difference than choosing between most distributions. Linux Mint with Cinnamon is a comfortable starting point for someone coming from Windows.

For a more minimal setup, Debian with XFCE or a lightweight window manager such as i3 would work well, but they require more manual configuration. I’d start with Mint or Xubuntu, and consider adding zram if you notice memory pressure.
