Which Linux distribution would work well on my older laptop?

I have an 8-year-old Samsung laptop with a 7th-generation Intel Core i3-7020U, 4 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB NVMe SSD. Windows 11 feels slow and bloated on it, so I'm considering Linux for the first time. I mainly want to watch study videos and movies, browse the web, use it alongside my Samsung tablet, and occasionally play lightweight games or use emulators. Which distribution and desktop environment would be beginner-friendly and run smoothly? Any setup tips would also be appreciated.

Linux Mint with the Xfce desktop would be a comfortable starting point. It’s beginner-friendly, handles browsing and basic media use well, and Xfce is light enough for 4 GB of RAM. You can test it from a bootable USB before installing.

Fedora with KDE could also work, especially if you want newer software and gaming support. However, KDE may use more memory than Xfce, so with only 4 GB of RAM I’d start with Mint Xfce or MX Linux Xfce unless you plan to upgrade the memory.

Linux Mint should be more than adequate for videos, web browsing, office work, and lightweight games. For demanding games, you could stream them from your more powerful Windows computer if your network and Wi-Fi hardware are reliable.

MX Linux with Xfce is another strong choice for older hardware. It’s fairly lightweight and practical for a first Linux installation. After installing, enabling zram can help the system feel more responsive when the limited memory is under pressure.

Xfce is the desktop environment, not the distribution itself. Mint and MX Linux are distributions that can use Xfce as their interface.
