Why am I only getting 160–180 FPS in Fortnite with an RTX 3080 and i7-14700F?

I'm playing Fortnite at 1080p with an RTX 3080, an Intel i7-14700F, and 40GB of RAM. In competitive settings, I usually get around 160–180 FPS, but I experience frequent drops. I was expecting closer to 240–260 FPS with this hardware. What could be limiting my performance, and what should I check?

At 1080p competitive settings, Fortnite is often more CPU-limited than GPU-limited. The 14700F should generally perform well, but the result depends on the game mode, view distance, 3D resolution, frame limit, and whether features such as Nanite, shadows, or high-quality effects are enabled. Monitor CPU and GPU usage while playing: low GPU usage with one or more CPU cores heavily loaded points to a CPU or game-engine limit. Make sure your monitor is connected to the graphics card and remove any unintended FPS cap.

Fortnite’s performance can change a lot between updates because of Unreal Engine changes, shader compilation, background tasks, and different in-game areas. Before replacing anything, check your temperatures and clock speeds, enable the correct performance mode, update or clean-install your GPU drivers, and make sure Fortnite is using the intended rendering mode. Also verify that your RAM is running at its rated speed and that there isn’t a background process causing stutters. An RTX 3080 can handle high FPS, but consistent 240–260 FPS depends heavily on the exact settings and whether the CPU can keep up in busy scenes.

I’d troubleshoot the current system first. Upgrading to a different platform might improve minimum FPS, but it shouldn’t be the first recommendation when the existing hardware is already high-end.
