I live in a shared house on Oahu with wiring that may not meet code. Most outlets seem fine, but the particular outlet used by my desktop has caused about five power-supply failures over the past two or three years. A repair technician suggested buying a UPS, and although I connected my PC to its battery-backed, surge-protected outlet, another PSU still failed. The UPS is a relatively inexpensive model. Before rearranging my room to use a different outlet, what should I check, and would an electrician, line conditioner, or different type of UPS help?

Have the outlet and the house wiring inspected first. A three-prong receptacle tester can reveal reversed hot and neutral, an open ground, or other obvious faults, but it cannot replace an electrician's inspection. If the wiring is genuinely unsafe, continuing to plug expensive electronics into it is a fire and shock risk. Fixing the outlet is much better than repeatedly replacing PSUs.
As a temporary workaround, use a properly rated extension cord from a known-good outlet if it can be routed safely and does not become a trip or heat hazard. Do not daisy-chain power strips or keep sacrificing surge protectors to absorb repeated faults. If multiple PSUs are failing, other appliances in the house may also be under stress, so this is an electrical problem—not just a computer-accessory problem.
A line conditioner with automatic voltage regulation may help if the problem is sustained low or high voltage, but first find out what is actually happening. Check whether the UPS reports input voltage, watch for flickering lights, and compare several outlets. The utility company may need to investigate if the whole house has unstable voltage. Also make sure the replacement PSUs are reputable units rather than low-quality knockoffs.
Many inexpensive UPS units only switch to battery when the power fails. They may provide surge protection, but they do not continuously correct brownouts, overvoltage, or unstable input power. An online UPS, or a UPS explicitly offering automatic voltage regulation and line conditioning, can provide cleaner output, though even that should not be used to mask dangerous wiring. A surge protector also depends on a properly grounded outlet.

That makes sense. I’ll test the outlet and arrange for an electrician instead of treating the UPS as a permanent fix.
