My HP Victus stopped charging, so I removed its 2280 M.2 SSD to recover my files. I placed the drive in a Ugreen adapter and connected it to an older Acer Aspire 5. Windows detects something, but Disk Management reports the drive as unknown and not initialized. I believe the SSD is installed correctly. What could be causing this, and how can I access the files without losing them?

First check whether the SSD is NVMe or M.2 SATA. M.2 describes the shape, not the connection type, and many USB adapters support only one of those standards. If the adapter and drive do not match, Windows may detect the device but be unable to read it.
Do not initialize or format the disk while trying to recover files. Initialization can overwrite important partition information. Verify the adapter supports the drive type, try another USB port or cable, and check whether the drive is visible with its correct capacity in Disk Management. If it still shows as unknown, use a compatible enclosure or a professional recovery service rather than writing anything to the SSD.
The original laptop may have used BitLocker or device encryption. If so, the drive can appear unusual when connected elsewhere, and you will need the recovery key or the original Windows account credentials to unlock it. Check your Microsoft account for a saved BitLocker recovery key.
