Why does my UPS shut off during outages even though it reports plenty of runtime?

About a week ago, a brief power outage caused everything connected to my UPS—including my PC, monitor, and speakers—to shut down. When power returned roughly five seconds later, other devices in the apartment came back on, but the UPS outlets stayed off. Normally, the UPS beeps and displays its remaining runtime during an outage, but this time it showed no signs of switching to battery power. Holding the UPS power button brought it back immediately.

I initially thought I might have accidentally switched it off while silencing the alarms, but the same thing happened again while I was gaming, and I know I did not press the button. It has also worked normally during at least one other short outage and reported around 112 minutes of runtime, so I assumed the battery was still healthy.

The UPS is about five years old, and I would prefer not to spend around $150 on a replacement unless necessary. Is replacing the battery likely to fix this, or does this behavior suggest that the UPS itself is failing? Could the connected load also be too high? The system includes a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4080 Founders Edition, 64 GB of memory, an ultrawide 144 Hz monitor, and a Logitech speaker system.

At five years old, the battery is well past the normal service life for many UPS units. The outage where it worked may not prove that it is good; the load, battery state, or voltage conditions may simply have been different. A weak battery often fails when the UPS briefly switches to battery power for automatic voltage regulation or a short interruption, even if it still shows an impressive estimated runtime.

The battery is the most likely problem. Standard UPS batteries are usually sealed lead-acid units, and they commonly last only two to three years—sometimes a little longer depending on heat and usage. A battery can still report a large estimated runtime while being unable to provide the sudden current needed when the UPS switches to battery mode. That can make the UPS shut off immediately during an outage or even a brief voltage dip.

If the replacement battery is reasonably priced and the UPS passes its self-test afterward, replacing it is worth trying. Use the correct voltage, size, connector, and chemistry specified for the UPS. Don’t install a lithium battery in a UPS designed for lead-acid unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that replacement; the charging and protection systems are different. If a known-good battery does not solve the issue, the UPS electronics or battery-management circuitry may be failing, and replacing the whole unit would make more sense.

A battery that lasts through a basic unplug test is not necessarily healthy under the PC’s peak load. The runtime estimate can also be misleading, especially if the battery has high internal resistance.

Check the UPS model and its rated wattage before buying anything. Your gaming PC and graphics card can create a substantial load, especially during a game, and an overloaded UPS may shut down when it switches to battery. However, the age and symptoms still point more strongly toward a worn-out battery. If the UPS has a load display or monitoring software, check the wattage and make sure it has enough capacity above the system’s normal and transient demand.

The practical approach is to replace the lead-acid battery with a compatible replacement from a reputable battery manufacturer rather than automatically buying the manufacturer’s branded pack. If the UPS is otherwise reliable and the battery is inexpensive, that is a reasonable repair. If the replacement costs a large portion of a new UPS, or if the unit continues shutting down afterward, replace the UPS instead. Lithium power stations can have much longer battery life, but they are not automatically drop-in replacements for a conventional UPS and may not provide the same automatic switchover or computer-shutdown features.
