I bought a custom-built gaming PC about a month ago with a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, RTX 5080, and 32 GB of RAM. This is my first gaming PC, so I'm still learning how everything works. The system feels much slower than I expected: games have low FPS, and switching between browser tabs can feel sluggish. I checked Task Manager and the listed components appear to match the advertised specifications. The monitor is connected to the graphics card, Windows was freshly installed, and the seller installed the NVIDIA drivers. What should I check or change to improve performance?

There are a lot of possible causes, including missing drivers, power settings, thermal throttling, incorrect BIOS settings, or the graphics card being installed in the wrong PCIe slot. Run a fresh NVIDIA driver installation, install the motherboard chipset drivers, and check Task Manager while gaming to see whether the CPU, GPU, memory, or storage drive is reaching 100% usage.
Check the monitor’s refresh rate in Windows and in the monitor’s own menu. A high-end PC can still feel disappointing if the display is limited to 60 Hz or if the game is capped at a low frame rate. Set the display to its proper native resolution and highest supported refresh rate, then check for V-Sync or an FPS limit in the game.
“Slow” can mean several different things, so start by checking the actual FPS, GPU and CPU usage, temperatures, and clock speeds while a game is running. Also make sure the monitor cable is connected to the RTX 5080 rather than the motherboard, and confirm that the NVIDIA drivers are installed correctly.
The hardware should be extremely fast, so expectations alone probably don’t explain low FPS and sluggish tab switching. Record the exact game, resolution, graphics settings, FPS, monitor refresh rate, and temperatures. A screenshot of Task Manager’s Performance tab while the problem is happening would make it much easier to identify the bottleneck.

The parts shown in Task Manager seem to be the correct ones, and the seller reinstalled Windows before giving me the PC. I also watched them install NVIDIA drivers, although I’m not completely sure everything was configured correctly.
